Over 5,000 killed, 26,000 injured in road accidents in Myanmar last year

YANGON, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 5,184 people were killed and 26,741 injured in 17,451 traffic accidents in Myanmar in 2018, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Friday.

According to figures from the Myanmar Traffic Police Force, Yangon topped the list with 2,684 accidents, followed by Mandalay with 2,243 accidents, Ayeyawady with 2,033 accidents and the rest in other regions and states.

During the year, there were a total of 474 traffic accidents, registering 104 dead and 877 injured on Myanmar's busiest Yangon-Mandalay highway.

Reckless driving, over-speeding, defective vehicles and inclement weather were blamed for these traffic accidents.

In 2017, a total of 18,171 traffic accidents occurred countrywide, leaving 5,250 people killed and 29,144 injured.
